How to choose for the WC
A concealed cistern is a plumber’s job. Keep the DIY short if you are not sure of the model. Not a stack cable.
How to choose
Two different faults end in the same pan. If the water rises and will not fall, do not buy a diaphragm: it is a blockage, and the page is a WC that will not flush. A WC plunger, not a snake as a first move, and not a second flush if the level is rising.
If water enters the pan on its own, at a normal level, it is the cistern. The colouring test and the isolator are on a cistern that leaks. Without the brand and the model the spare is a random part.
Do not buy a kit for a concealed cistern: it is not stripped from the plate to try. Do not buy a stack snake. If several fixtures back up, it is the stack, not the float.
Wipes, even biodegradable ones, do not go in the pan. A deodorant disc does not unblock and does not stop a leak. If you do not know whether it is the pan or the cistern, order nothing: look at the level and whether the cistern has water.
Minimal DIY
Household moves, not a building site. A stick and a deodoriser do not fill a dry trap and do not repair the sewer.

Example membrane for the fill valve of an exposed cistern. Only if you recognise the model. Not a concealed-cistern kit.
When: An exposed cistern that will not shut the water, and the membrane is the part you can see.
Not when: A concealed cistern, an unknown model, a leak from the wall.

Example universal kit for the bolts between an exposed cistern and a close-coupled pan. Not the float valve and not a concealed cistern.
When: It leaks between cistern and pan, and you can see the two bolts from below.
Not when: A concealed cistern, you are not sure those are the bolts, a leak from the wall.
