Mould behind a wardrobe: pull it out, measure, do not cover

Why the gap between furniture and an external wall stays damp, and what to do before anti-mould paint.

Behind a wardrobe on a cold wall, air does not mix. The surface sits closer to dew point. Mould there is common and not “dirt to wipe and forget”.

  1. Pull the unit 5–10 cm off the wall if you can.
  2. Measure room T and RH and, with a cheap IR gun, the reveal temperature.
  3. Clean what you see; do not paint over a corner that stays damp.

Is pulling the wardrobe out enough?+

It often reduces the dead corner. If whole-home RH is high or there is a thermal bridge, it is not enough on its own.

When: Stagnant corners, wardrobes on external walls, after you have measured.

Not when: Not a substitute for an extractor or dehumidifier if whole-home RH is high.

Cleaning visible mould (not covering paint)

Existing mould has to be removed. Anti-mould paint alone, if moisture stays high, is a delay.

When: After you understand the cause, while RH is being lowered.

Not when: Large areas, strong odour, vulnerable occupants: consider a professional.
