A waste that drains slowly

Introduction

One waste that empties slowly is a blockage close by, in the grille or the trap. If several fittings fill, or water rises on the ground floor, it is not that trap: it is the stack. A chemical is not the first move.

How to tell it apart

One fitting only, and the others run: stay on that waste and that trap.

Sink, basin and shower together, or a gurgle in another fitting when you run one: the stack.

Smell plus a slow kitchen sink: the grease first, on a sink that smells. Hair you can see in the shower: hair in the shower.

Little water from the spout, while the bowl empties: not the waste. That is a weak jet.

Likely causes

• Hair and soap in the waste.
• Grease in the sink trap.
• An open overflow, so the plunger pulls on nothing.
• A cracked trap: it leaks more than it runs slowly.
• The stack or a shared run, when more than one fitting is involved.

What to do now (€0)

1. Lift the grille and take out what you can see. Do not push the debris down the pipe.
2. Plunger: plug the overflow with a wet cloth, a little water in the bowl, pump straight. Do not use the WC plunger, or wash it first.
3. If nothing moves, stop. Do not pour a chemical and then try the plunger: the splash leaves the bowl.
4. Note whether one waste is slow or several. If it is several, stop.
5. Hot water, not boiling, only after you have lifted the bulk by hand. Not instead of the plunger.

A small DIY step

1. A bowl underneath, undo the trap by hand, clean, refit. If the part is cracked, measure Ø32 or Ø40 before you buy another.
2. A short hand snake only if the blockage is past the waste and you could open the trap. Not a stack cable and not a drill.
3. If the water sits again as soon as you have cleared it, stop. A 10 m cable is not a small DIY step.
4. The cards show for a single fitting. If the quiz says stack, do not buy a plunger for the building.

Mistakes to avoid

• A plunger straight after a chemical drain cleaner.
• Mixing two products, or pouring a second onto the first.
• Forcing plastic unions with pliers.
• A 10 m cable or a drill on a household trap.
• Carrying on when other wastes fill.

Safety

If you have already poured a product, do not add another and do not put the plunger on top: the splash carries the chemical out. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or with acids and descalers. Gloves, air, read the label, stop if you smell fumes. Acids and vinegar do not go on marble or natural stone.
