Windowless bath: remove vapour at the source

Why a portable unit in the lounge will not fix black silicone, and how to spec an extractor with a humidistat.

Updated 2026-09-01 · 6 min read

A windowless bathroom makes vapour in bursts. If it cannot leave, it condenses on mirror, silicone and ceiling. A lounge dehumidifier sees little of that.

  • Extractor discharging outside, not into a dead void.
  • Humidistat or a long overrun: the shower ends, the moisture does not.
  • Door shut during use; extraction stays primary.

FAQ

Can I just run a dehumidifier?+

You can, but you are treating whole-home air while vapour is made in a sealed box. The extractor is the bathroom tool.

What may help (after diagnosis)

No affiliate link is live. Products below are categories, not model reviews.

40–180 €

Bathroom extractor with humidistat

In a windowless bathroom this often beats a portable dehumidifier: it removes vapour at the source.

When: Bathroom mould, daily showers, poor air change.

Not when: It will not fix a thermal bridge in a bedroom.

8–25 €

Cleaning visible mould (not covering paint)

Existing mould has to be removed. Anti-mould paint alone, if moisture stays high, is a delay.

When: After you understand the cause, while RH is being lowered.

Not when: Large areas, strong odour, vulnerable occupants: consider a professional.
