air the house in winter

Winter airing: short bursts, not a crack for hours

Why a tilted window all day both cools and humidifies, and why three minutes fully open works better.

In winter you need air change, not a crack for eight hours. Moist air from laundry and showers has to leave; walls should not cool to dew point.

  1. Open opposite windows fully for 3–5 minutes, two or three times a day.
  2. Turn off radiators under the window while you air, if you can.
  3. Measure RH before and after: if it does not fall, the problem is not “you did not tilt enough”.

FAQ

Is a tilted window all day enough?+

Usually not: it chills reveals and glass and changes little air. Short, full openings work better.

10–25 €

Digital hygrometer (probe if you can)

Without a relative-humidity number, every tip is guesswork. A €10–25 hygrometer is the first useful purchase — before any dehumidifier.

When: Always, as the first diagnostic step.

Not when: It does not replace a moisture meter or a rising-damp survey.
