Rising damp: signs, DIY limits, why a dehumidifier is not enough

Stains from the skirting, salts, crumbling plaster. How to tell it from condensation and when you need a surveyor.

Rising damp is water climbing by capillarity. It is not “damp air” and it is not a sweating pane. Mixing it up with condensation is the fastest way to buy a useless compressor.

  • The wet band starts at the skirting and climbs, often fairly level.
  • Salts, crumbling, paint that blisters even in summer.
  • Worse after rain, or present all year — not only on cold mornings.

Will a dehumidifier dry rising damp?+

No. It treats air, not water climbing the wall. It may take the fug out of a room; it does not treat the cause.

How do I tell it from condensation?+

Height (starts low), season (often all year), salts, material moisture low versus high.

Example material moisture meter, no drilling. It helps compare “damp air” and “damp wall”: low vs high, stained vs sound. Absolute numbers are rough. Not a survey instrument.

When: Suspected rising damp or a leak; you want to see whether it starts at the skirting.

Not when: It does not certify a building, does not measure air RH, and does not replace a surveyor if there are salts, crumbling plaster or stains after rain.
